Magic Plants!

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Kennebunkport farm standsDespite frequent watering and fertilization, Walter’s extra-large tomato plants have failed to yield any fruit.  We at the Maine Stay Inn have been watching the plants extra carefully.  And magically, one morning these enormous gems appeared!

Don’t tell Walter, but if you look closely, you’ll see the string that holds them on.  Thank you, fun-loving guests in Romantic Cottage Suite #7!

A Day Trip to Nubble Lighthouse

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Nubble LightAlthough Kennebunkport boasts one of Southern Maine’s breathtaking lighthouses, Goat Island Light, it is on the small side, so it leaves many guests hankering for more. Not far down Route 1 lies the most photographed lighthouse in Maine – Nubble Light.  Nubble Lighthouse sits in Cape Neddick, a portion of York, Maine.  Less than 30 minutes away, it makes for a lovely day trip or excursion.

After enjoying your gourmet breakfast at the Maine Stay, head down scenic route 1 through the villages of Wells and Ogunquit.  While on your trip, don’t miss Woods to Goods, an authorized dealer of products made by prison inmates.  The majority of their goods are created in the Maine State Prison System.  You can’t missShawshank Prison this one – a “Shawshank Prison” car sits out front.  ”Shawshank Prison” may be fictional, but is based on the Maine Penitentiary in Thomaston, the nation’s third oldest maximum security prison.  Inside the store you will find a plethora of exquisite wood products – from fine furniture and doll houses to sculptures and cutting boards.  You would assume each one was carved by a skilled artisan, until you flip it over and find “Made in a Maine State Prison” stamped into the wood.

Afterwards, head into York Harbor for spectacular views of Nubble Light House.  Benches scattered on the rolling greens, binocular viewing stations, and a rocky shoreline provide View from Nubble Lighthouseopportunity for sea watching.  Fox’s Lobster House sits conveniently across the street. Choose to eat in their dining room, overlooking the harbor or outside from their walk-up window.  Their menu offers something for everyone, and their oversized milk shakes (or Frappes, for us New Englanders) are not to be missed.  The outdoor seating area is lovely and remarkably clean, but the granite benches overlooking crashing surf on the Nubble property beckons many (myself included).  But if you choose to forgo a munch at Fox’s, and instead pack a romantic picnic, don’t worry, there are public restrooms across the way.

It’s worth a trip, even in the rain, as you’ll find bowling alleys, arcades, shops, and galleries in York Harbor.

So this summer, when visiting The Maine Stay Inn, your Kennebunkport bed and breakfast, don’t miss a stop at Woods to Goods and the Nubble Light House.

Cookie Madness with the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport

Friday, April 16th, 2010

The Maine Stay Inn - a proud member of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport

The Historic Inns of Kennebunkport, the Maine Stay included, provide yet another great reason to visit Kennebunkport in the spring – Cookie Madness!  On April 24, 2010, the historic inns will join together for a tour of each spectacular property, made even sweeter by a selection of their favorite cookies! (Okay, I confess, the pun was intended…) This is the perfect opportunity to snoop in all of the inns you have been so curious about! So walk from the Maine Stay Inn to Captain Fairfield Inn, Captain Lord Mansion, and Captain Jefferds Inn. If you’re up for a longer walk (or feel the need to burn off some of those treats), hike on over to English Meadows Inn, located in Lower Village Kennebunk.  Don’t worry, no one will fault you for hopping in the car, especially when you’ll want one to explore the 1802 House Inn and Old Fort Inn.

The Maine Stay is looking forward to baking (and enjoying) their favorite cookies and sharing them will all of you!  So save your appetites for the Historic Inns’ Annual Cookie Tour.  See you next weekend!

Spring is an extraordinary season to visit Kennebunkport and Southern Maine.  The flowers are blooming and the days are long.  The shops are open and everyone is gearing up for summer, but the area isn’t crowded.  That means parking at the beach and theHospitality for Habitat ability to drop in to your favorite restaurants!  But the Maine Stay is making your springtime getaway even sweeter with incredible discounts on our most romantic rooms.

Kennebunkport’s Maine Stay Inn will offer guests 50% off weekend room rates Monday through Thursday between April 26th through May 28th 2010 in support of ‘Hospitality for Habitat’, a Maine Innkeepers Association program, originally designed to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity projects in Maine. The Maine Stay Inn’s Local Initiative

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

For the past two years, the Maine Stay Inn has been working diligently to become more environmentally friendly.  We use primarily natural “green” cleaning products and switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs wherever possible.  We instituted a recycling program and have a variety of exterior lights on photosensitive timers.  In the summer, we grow our own herbs to be used in breakfast preparation.  We even patronize local mattress makers and fine linen manufacturers.  But our latest step in becoming a green establishment is in the kitchen! The Maine Stay Inn is proud to announce it now purchases Maine raised eggs and dairy products!  So while we don’t keep chickens or let cattle graze in our ample backyard, we’re getting as close as we can! So during your next visit to the Maine Stay, keep an eye out for our egg and dairy creations and rest easy, knowing we’re supporting the local economy and reducing our carbon footprint!
