Kennebunkport Bars: Federal Jack’s vs. The Ramp

Monday, March 1st, 2010

While Federal Jack’s Brewpub and The Ramp at Pier 77 both bill themselves as pubs catering to sports fanatics, the similarities stop there.  Read on to see how they stack up.

Federal Jack’s Brew Pub sits on prime real estate in Lower Village Kennebunk, right on the river overlooking a marina.  It’s second floor location could be a deterrent to some, but an elevator distinguishes it from most places in town.  And it is huge.  I mean huge. Their dish slide is larger than the entire kitchen at the Maine Stay. During the summertime Federal Jack’s operates five separate serving areas – the main dining room, the bar, the pool room, the outdoor decks, and a smaller dining room.

In contrast, The Ramp barely has five tables!  Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but it is much smaller and is actually one of the smallest eateries in town.  Granted, it’s big sister, Pier 77 (upstairs and closed for the winter) compensates for its small size.  The low ceilings and water level location in Cape Porpoise make it a much more intimate spot, and little space between tables ensures you’ll be friendly with your neighbors by the end of the night.  And for its small size, the Ramp offers a surprisingly diverse menu, especially during the warmer months when patrons can choose to dine off Pier 77’s menu.

Just like it’s floor plan, the menu at Fed’s is astoundingly large.  But your best bets are standard American pub fare – burgers and fried food.  Their chowder is good, as are their salads, desserts, and daily $10 special, but skip the fancy stuff – Fed’s is best for basics.

The Ramp, however, has a phenomenal chef, so don’t hesitate to order the unusual here – it’s all (and always) good.  For the chowdah connoisseurs out there – their’s is of the potato-y variety.

Federal Jack’s beckons sports fans because of its plethora of widescreen TVs, long hours (they’re open until 12:30 a.m. daily), and beer brewed on site, while The Ramp brings out the fan in all of us with its vintage athletic memorabilia and the soft glow of two small TVs.

So here’s the final breakdown:

  • Late-night service: Fed’s
  • Cuisine: The Ramp
  • Prime sports viewing: Fed’s
  • Atmosphere for the non-sport viewer: The Ramp
  • Location: Fed’s
  • Ocean Views: The Ramp

These two eateries are staples for the Maine Stay and all of Kennebunkport, but serve entirely different needs.  So come to Kennebunkport and the Maine Stay Inn to decide for yourself!

Christmas in Kennebunkport, Maine

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Now that the Turkey has been eaten and the pumpkin pie demolished, the Maine Stay is getting ready for Christmas.  In Kennebunkport, the holidays arrive early, beginning the first weekend of December.  Our now-famous Christmas Prelude is a few days away, and the town is aglow with twinkling lights and brimming with holiday cheer.

This Friday night is the lighting of Kennebunkport’s towering pine in downtown Dock Square, and the weekend will be filled with visits from Santa by lobster boat, caroling, bell ringing, craft fairs, and general merriment.

At the Maine Stay, we’re getting ready for Christmas Prelude, but have more lights to string and wreaths to hang.

Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season,

Everyone at the Maine Stay Inn, your Kennebunkport Maine bed and breakfast inn

Put Your Mind At Ease

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

When booking a vacation, there’s always that little voice that says, “What happens if I can’t make it?”  The Maine Stay Inn now has the answer – trip cancellation insurance.  It seems like an easy answer, so it can’t be affordable, right?  Wrong!  The Maine Stay Inn has established a relationship with a reputable travel insurance company to provide low cost policies without the middle-man.  Price check online all you want, but the policy we provide is the lowest around.

Here’s the gist of it: for less than the cost of a bottle of champagne (for a $500 reservation), you can protect yourself against canceling your getaway.  Unlike most costly “trip insurance” plans that include health care, emergency transportation, and the like, trip cancellation protects against obstacles that prevent you from making your journey in the first place.  For those wondering exactly how affordable these policies could be, you can find out for yourself here or give us a call at 207-967-2117.  One of the perks of this plan is that you have ten whole days to examine the fine print (all of which we have read and deemed reasonable) and decide if it is something you’d like to invest in.

Now that this affordable policy is available to all guests, we will encourage everyone to make this small investment in their piece of mind.  No one expects to have an emergency, but the Maine Stay and iTravelInsured have teamed up to protect you against obstacles that might prevent you from making your trip to Kennebunkport and The Maine Stay Inn.

Fall in New England

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Although autumn doesn’t officially begin for five days, fall has clearly arrived in the Kennebunks.  On my evening run last night, I happily donned on a long-sleeved shirt.  I even noticed the first hints of color on the leaves!  A few trees are incredibly vibrant, but for most, the changing is just beginning.  And the first frost may even make an appearance tonight in central areas of the state.

Even our beaches our seeing the change – they are sparsely populated and no sand toys are to be found. Few people are brave enough to dive into the water, but when they do, most are clad in wetsuits.  Don’t misconstrue this, however, the water is incredibly warm – it’s the air that causes a slight chill!

Spectacular September

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Labor Day weekend is upon us, but in Kennebunkport, Maine, it’s still summer!  All of us at the Maine Stay Inn, your Kennbunkport bed and breakfast inn, think September is the best summertime

Kennebunkport in Early fall

Kennebunkport in Early fall

month.  The crowds have thinned and the families with children have shipped out (not that we don’t love them!).  There is noticeably less clamor, and fewer sand toys abandoned on our lovely shores.  But, the water is at its warmest, hitting nearly 70 degrees this week and the evenings are cool enough that you won’t need air conditioning.

All of Kennebunkport’s fine eateries are still open, but you’re more likely to get your desired dining time or wait less without a reservation.  Afterwards, you can hit the shops – it stays light pretty late and the stores stay open.  You’ll need a sweater, though, because the evenings do get chilly!

The Maine Stay Inn will add another reason to head to Kennebunkport in September – our fantastic specials!  For this month only, visit the Maine Stay and enjoy our luxurious accommodations for three nights, and get the fourth free.  Or, stay two nights and save 50% on your third night.  Book today to reap the benefits of Maine in early fall.

Signs of Spring at our Kennebunkport Inn

Recently renovated family cottage suite #10

Recently renovated family cottage suite #10

Monday afternoon, a gorgeous spring day, I hear the horse and carriage going by our front door, I hear the driver talking about our historic home.  The passengers are not wrapped in blankets.  I guess spring is here.  The phone rings and I book a reservation for this upcoming weekend for one of our newly renovated family friendly cottages, yes another sign of spring.  Guests are going to the Sea Dogs this week, it must be so.  Spring has sprung.  Cottage 6 our two bedroom unit is booked all week.  Saturday, we are planning to set up the front porch with the outdoor furniture. Mabel’s Lobster Claw has opened.  Perhaps it won’t be too long before we can serve breakfast on the porch.  It must be so…we survived our first winter in Kennebunkport and in a few days we will celebrate our first anniversary of owning the Maine Stay Inn. The reservations are coming in for summer and we are beginning to welcome back repeat guests.  We look forward to seeing old friends and new and enjoying the gorgeous Maine spring and summer.

PAII not PIE

Monday, April 6th, 2009

No, we were not eating PIE in Atlanta, but we were instead ingesting
information galore at the Professional Association of International
Innkeepers annual conference, commonly known as PAII.

Last September, when I was beginning to grasp the complexities of inn keeping,
I arranged for us to go to the PAII conference. Although my background is in sales and retail management and Walter’s in sales and accounting, it seemed like a good match for inn keeping. We quickly learned that we desperately needed more knowledge and training. The PAII conference provided us with the opportunity to take four days of classes in Internet marketing, record keeping, cooking, customer service, and Quick Books. We recharged our souls by acquiring new knowledge and meeting fellow innkeepers also dedicated to providing exceptional stays for their guests. When we committed our money for this conference, it seemed like a huge investment and perhaps unnecessary. Now I fully understand the value of PAII, and I look forward to implementing some of our newly learned skills in hopes that we will be able to provide our future guests with better than ever getaways. We are constantly learning here. Our friends who think we are only changing sheets and cooking are so wrong. Everyday we have new surprises and challenges, but more importantly, we are constantly learning how to improve our offerings and to provide fabulous experiences for our guests.

Dining Critic

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Judi the Innkeeper always thought it would be great fun to be a restaurant critic, so now she has deemed herself “restaurant critic of the Maine Stay”. Judi has made a new commitment; she will suggest to her guests and on her web site only restaurants has been to. Since Judi and Walter purchased the Maine Stay in May of 2008, the focus of restaurant visits had initially been limited to Kennebunkport and Kennebunk. The first restaurant that Judi and Walter thoroughly enjoyed that was slightly outside of Kennebunkport was Joshua’s. Monday evening in late February was cold and uninviting, however the evening spent at Joshua’s was completely welcoming. The dining experience was special for two reasons, not only was the food fabulous, but the company unparalleled. Two guests at the inn, who had came to freezing Kennebunkport to get a taste of winter from Belize were truly a delight; it was the first time Judi and Walter had ever dined with guests and the evening will always be remembered as exceptional.
Joshua’s in Wells, Maine is in a 230 year old home that features old brick hearths, wide pine floor boards, and Indian shutters, with accents of contemporary touches making for a comfortable dining experience. The meal obviously reflects Joshua’s commitment to freshness, we ordered appetizers, entrees, and desserts and everything was fabulous. Judi’s only regret was that she had not dined there earlier and that she had deprived her guests of the knowledge of this incredible restaurant.
