At Last, Gluten Free Chowder!

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

At the Maine Stay Inn, an allergy-friendly Kennebunkport bed and breakfast, I often greet guests plagued by Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance.  Because I am also gluten-free, it is easy for me to guide them on area restaurants, menu options, and, of course, breakfast at the inn.  But the question that stumps me most often is “Where can I get gluten free chowder?” Until recently, I could only shrug my shoulders.  But it exists!

Off the beaten path in downtown Kennebunk, you will find the Kennebunk Inn, an unassuming building on Route 1.  At Academe, the restaurant, you will find casual decor with comfortable ambiance.  We find ourselves seated at the bar most often – with one television and bartenders chatting up regulars – in an attempt for expedited food and excellent company.  If you’re looking to get the scoop from locals, the bar is the place to be! Nevertheless, on a recent visit, I asked if they had any special soup. They did – haddock chowder (I know, still not New England clam, but still good) – and, certain I would know the answer, asked if they would find out if it was gluten-free.  It is!  I was flabbergasted.

And, boy, was it good!  It may be slightly thinner than old fashioned clam chowder, it is excellent, even by non GF standards.  The potatoes are perfectly tender and not crumbling to bits, with large pieces of haddock submerged in an opaque (and perfectly safe!), creamy broth.

After campaigning for its place on their permanent menu, I was told that they offer haddock chowder 70% of the time.  So before trekking into Kennebunk, call ahead to find out for certain that gluten free chowder is on the menu.  Or better yet, have one of us at your Kennebunkport bed and breakfast inn check for you!

So gluten-free eaters look no further for a safe and oh-so-delectable chowder that won’t disappoint – even without the clams!

When Nothing But Chinese Will Do

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

While I refuse to believe there is such a thing as “too much lobster,” sometimes you just have to have Chinese.  I had one of those nights recently and headed out from our Kennebunkport bed and breakfast in search of the perfect place to satisfy my craving.

Driving down Route 1, a Japanese maple leaf caught my attention.  Just 5 miles from the Maine Stay Inn – could it be?  Maple Leaves Garden, a Chinese and Japanese restaurant and bar, isn’t much to look at, but I ventured inside.  The lack of cars out front wasn’t promising, but I took a gamble.  And, boy, did it pay off!

Although I was hankering for some traditional Chicken with Broccoli, I started with a miso soup.  I had to try something from their Japanese selection, right? (Rationalizing when it comes to food is one of my specialties.)  The miso was cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of seaweed and firm silken tofu.  Next came the chicken and broccoli I had been craving.  The broccoli had been steamed just right, brilliantly green and exactly enough crunch.  The chicken was similarly delicious, smothered, but not drowning, in a not-too-sweet and not-too-salty brown sauce.  Yum!  Their family style bean curd followed suit, and the often-ruined Vegetarian Delight was light and fresh.

A staple for many locals, the decor is not upscale by any means.  But when the food is good and the price right (plus, there’s never a wait), who is to argue!  So next time you are “lobster-ed out” or looking to squelch that Chinese craving on your Maine vacations, look outside the Kennebunkport restaurants, and head to Wells, Maine for a budget-friendly meal at Maple Leaves Garden.

One Dock: The Kennebunkport Inn Restaurant

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Just after becoming innkeepers of the Maine Stay Inn and Cottages, one of the finest Kennebunkport bed and breakfast inns, we chose to dine at the Kennebunkport Inn.  Its early American feel and lackluster entertainment did not exactly have me chomping at the bit for more.  But last summer they revamped this Kennebunkport restaurant with a new chef, new menu, and new style.  Our guests gave excellent reviews to the new One Dock, as did celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, who visited Kennebunkport, Maine, last summer and rated it one of its favorite Maine restaurants.

So we finally ventured around the corner to find out what all the fuss was about.  At first glance I was disappointed.  The Early American flair still lingers, with uninspired wall coverings and traditional decor.  Something just didn’t jive with the contemporary menu offerings and inspired cocktails.  But that simply didn’t matter once I tasted their food. The new menu offers small tapas-style plates, as well as “Maine Plates” (a.k.a. entrees). Their baby spinach and radicchio salad was light, yet filling, and offered a unique twist on your basic spinach salad with pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed vinaigrette.  The duck entree was equally divine, and although that is my go-to choice, it was very nearly upstaged by the vegetarian risotto.  With white truffle oil, it had body often lacking in vegetarian options.

With such an incredible menu, it’s hard to imagine that we had room for dessert, but we did!  The flourless chocolate torte was out of this world – and great for gluten-free folks – and made uniquely Maine with a Maine cranberry coulis.  It’s pretty dense, so you might have to take it home – or make room for that next half slice.

So the next time you visit Kennebunkport, add One Dock to your list of dinner digs.  For “in between” dining (not quite casual, but also not fine dining), it’s a must-try with nightly entertainment all summer long.

Fine Dining in Southern Maine

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

For a phenomenal dinner without any pretense, head to Joshua’s Restaurant in Wells, ME.  Located just 4 miles from your Kennebunkport bed and breakfast, the Maine Stay Inn and Cottages, Joshua’s is located on Route 1 in an antique farmhouse.  You’ll only find Joshua in the kitchen – a self-taught chef with world-class instincts.  His creations are always phenomenal – mostly because they are perfectly prepared with the freshest ingredients. They didn’t even need a second reminder that Johanna is gluten-free – one mention on the phone while making a reservation, and the waiter presented her with “safe” options from the menu.  They even set aside a serving of their seafood special, of which they were almost sold out (just because they thought she might enjoy that gluten-free option).  The service, as you probably already deduced, was equally wonderful.  Water refills came as needed (not overly frequently, but we never thirsted either) and our server was attentive but not overly so.  In my eyes, the mark of a truly excellent restaurant lies in their Caesar Salad.  And Joshua’s, as expected, was flawless.  The sautéed mushrooms were equally delectable and the fried artichokes were delish!  You’ll never wonder what you are ingesting here, because every component is unadulterated, with flavors melding gently in each concoction.  Every vegetable (many produced on the family farm) is cooked to perfection and the meats and

Beautiful Breads!

fish were done just right. The scallops?  Out of this world.  Despite being filled to the brim (the fresh, homemade bread – and it really is homemade, not just baked there – didn’t help matters), we couldn’t resist sharing the crème brulee.  With a distinctly salty undertone, it was the perfect end to an already perfect meal.

So for one of the best values around, make sure to add Joshua’s to your short list when visiting Kennebunkport, Maine and the Maine Stay Inn.

Feile – An Irish Pub

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Late night dining can sometimes be a challenge in Kennebunkport, particularly for those travelers heading north after work.  But a recent discovery in Wells, Maine, just expanded the options.  Feile, an Irish Pub, offers an extensive menu, served until 10, and a pub menu, available until 12:30.  The best parts?  The reasonably priced food is very good and it’s on the way from I-95 to The Maine Stay Inn!

The portions at Feile were enormous, and a tremendous value – a 1/2 pound burger for just $8.  Salads were fresh and satisfying (I highly recommend the Arugula Salad with dried cranberries, spiced nuts, and blue cheese).  Appetizers can easily be shared by an entire family or enjoyed as an entree (with plenty to take home).

The staff is attentive, but not overly so, and the atmosphere is charming.  The dining room is intimate and vaguely romantic, while the pub boasts large flat-screens for sports viewing (although the sound is remarkably soft, and not disruptive to those seated in booths away from the bar).

Feile Restaurant and Pub is an excellent option for guests of the Maine Stay looking to enjoy a later dinner or those anxious to fill up before arriving.  It’s location is ideal – Route 1 in Wells – just about 5 miles from the Maine Stay Inn.  So now New England guests heading to Kennebunkport after work should no longer stress about finding a good, satisfying meal to start their getaway off right!

White Barn Inn: 2010 Guest Chef Series

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Travelers visiting Kennebunkport often come to indulge in the best of everything – dining, shopping, and, of course, lodging at the Maine Stay Inn.  For those guests, the White Barn Inn’s five star, five diamond restaurant is a must.  Chef Jonathan Cartwright’s creations never fail to impress, and their service is like no other.  Think white gloves and choreographed plate presentation.  But be prepared, gentlemen must wear jackets.

But for two weekends this spring, the White Barn Inn will import not just the best ingredients, but chefs as well!  For the weekend of April 9-11, master chef, Christoph Zangerl, will bring creativity from the five star Interalpen Hotel in Tyrol, Austria.  Then from April 23-25, another Relais and Chateaux chef, Joseph Lenn, will take the helm while he visits from Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee.

So that makes April a perfect time to visit Kennebunkport and the Maine Stay Inn – for a chance to experience incredible cuisine with a new flair.  Take a taste of Austria or the American South without ever leaving New England.  Remember, we’re always just 86 miles from Boston!
